Barry's Bootcamp West

You might know Queensway for its Chinese restaurants, or shopping centre Whitely’s. What you didn’t know is that its eponymous, philandering founder was assassinated on his shop floor – by an illegitimate son no less. But that’s another story…

Now you will know Queensway for one thing, and one thing only. Barry’s Bootcamp.

If you’re not familiar with booking a class, let us enlighten you…

It usually involves waiting until midday and furiously clicking the refresh button until next week’s schedule appears. You then have a matter of minutes to battle hundreds of Londoners for a space. Or be left with a 9pm slot (because everyone loves high-intensity training before bedtime – when will we learn!)

It’s fair to say this one is in demand. A reason why you’ll never find it on ClassPass and why you’ll do well to even grace the waitlists of top trainers like Sandy, Anya and Faisal.

Sandwiched between not one but TWO tube stations, over the road from Hyde Park, Barry’s West is within walking distance of Westbourne Grove, Portobello Market and Notting Hill. Treasure troves of healthy brunch spots and cosy, dog friendly pubs. (We’re particularly fond of The Mall Tavern).

Between a large, air conditioned Pret and arguably the best Chinese in London, Barry’s West go-ers will be spoilt for choice for post-workout fuel. But let’s not forget about their on site Fuel Bar serving up protein packed shakes and healthy boxed meals.

Enter through a heavy door and descend a staircase under the gaze of a blazing red neon sign reminiscent of Soho’s red light district. Sign in at reception, pick up a towel, pre-order a shake and enter the nightclub studio with its trademark red lighting.

It feels a little bit like waiting for a roller-coaster as the roaring sound system and mic’d up trainer beckons you inside.

Work through a signature cardiovascular and strength workout designed to “shock” the body and leave on a high that lasts for hours.

They say once you go Barry’s you never go back… and with Queensway set to become “the Covent Garden of the West”, there’s all the more reason to visit. Barry’s & Brunch anyone?
