CHAPEL HOUSE, PENZANCE

A B&B rich in history

Chapel House launched in 2015, after owner Susan Stuart fell in love with the property in December 2012, and set about breathing new life into the neglected building, blending Georgian style and architecture with contemporary style to create a light, airy and welcoming hotel moments from the sea. Built in 1790 to the highest standards of its day, the building has been home to several notable figures. Former inhabitants include Admiral Samuel Hood Linzee of HMS Temeraire, the ship made famous by JMW Turner’s iconic painting The Fighting Temeraire. It was also the base of the Carne family, an influential banking and mining dynasty instrumental in the development of Penzance during the 19th century through investments in the harbour and railways. Since then, Chapel House has been a family home, a shelter for WW2 evacuees, a lodging house, and from 1993 to 2011, the Penzance Arts Club.

Susan launched as a hotel in 2015, with 6 beautiful light filled rooms but now has revamped it again with the addition of two super suites, housed in a Georgian building across a courtyard garden, which would have originally supplied produce and bounty for Chapel House’s kitchen. The suites offer a wonderful sun filled space to enjoy the views across Mounts Bay – ideal with a sundowner after a long day exploring Penzance. Guests can enjoy panoramic views across the harbour over to St Michael’s Mount shimmering in Mounts Bay, and south across to Lizard Point and Mousehole. The living space has deep sofas and wood burners, ideal for hunkering down for a cosy night in. Each suite also benefits from a small but perfectly formed handmade kitchen, so that guests can book in for longer stays with self-catering.

Room rates at Chapel House PZ are from £150 per night. This is based on double occupancy and includes all taxes and fees.

CARBIS BAY BEACH LODGES

A beachside lodge

The Lodges are Carbis Bay opened last year following a multi-million-pound beach regeneration project which saw the launch of eight luxury Beach Lodges and Suites- which are most exclusive beachside offering in the UK and a new level of luxury in Cornwall, with infinity views of St Ives Bay, a prime position and direct access onto the award-winning Carbis Bay beach. Who needs the Maldives when you have these beaches?

The lodges have a large open-plan living space and dining room, kitchenette and a private garden, allowing guests to maximise the opportunity to enjoy the Bay’s outstanding views. All Lodges are the epitome of laid back luxury, with mood lighting throughout, the most modern of technology including Bang & Olufsen entertainment systems and floor to ceiling windows overlooking the golden sands of Carbis Bay with its rich ever-changing palette of sea colours that has inspired artists for centuries, all with balconies and hot tubs overlooking the beach (ideal for seal and dolphin watching!)

The lodges sleep between 6- 8 people, with a hot tub located in the garden overlooking the surf. During their stay, guests of the Lodges are able to make use of a personal guest host available around the clock to take care of all requirements before and during their visit. Carbis can arrange private dinners, (usually cooked in the lodge but at this time cooked and delivered!) and barbecues set up on guests’ own patch of golden sand, and all can be booked via a tablet system in each Lodge. Given the isolation needs of guests, meals can be delivered daily to their door, with no contact at all.

For those cooped up in lockdown, they are the ideal luxury escape to white sands, turquoise water and sunshine – without the need to book flights.

Lodges from £1500 per night – hoping to reopen from 4 July. Call +44 (0)1736 795311
