David Bowie might have told us “look at life it’s no piece of cake”, but two new openings at Hotel Cafe Royal over the next couple of months will celebrate both Sweet Things and the legend who sang about them.

First to launch is Ziggy’s, a bar dedicated to pop icon David Bowie. One of the hotel’s most renowned past patrons, Bowie famously hosted the retirement party for his alter ego Ziggy Stardust at Café Royal in the 1970s.

Ziggy’s will offer a range of both classic and innovative cocktails inspired by David Bowie’s life and his famous album “The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars”, with each drink named after a lyric from the record.

Highlights from the new menu include ‘Tiger on Vaseline’, a twist on the Pina Colada which is a mix mix of Cachaça, Tanaka spiced rum, roasted pineapple juice and lime juice, topped with coconut and white chocolate foam. Or there’s the ‘Femme Fatale’, a homage to Bowie’s love of martinis, which uses Japanese liqueur sake and French aperitif Byrrh (a sweet vermouth), and is garnished with a delicate rose petal floating on top.

The bar will be decorated with a curated selection of photography of David Bowie by prolific music photographer Mick Rock, to include some of the most well-known images of Ziggy alongside more intimate and rare photographs.

Hot on the heels of the launch of Ziggy’s Bar will be the eagerly-anticipated opening of Cakes & Bubbles, headed up by Albert Adrià, who was voted The World’s Best Pastry Chef by The World’s 50 Best Restaurants.

Cakes & Bubbles will be Adrià’s first permanent site outside of Spain, where he built a gastronomic revolution alongside his brother, Ferran, at the legendary Michelin three-star elBulli.

Adrià’s work is renowned for whimsy and playfulness, and Cakes & Bubbles is set to be no exception, serving a parade of exceptional desserts that defy description.

Diners will be able to sample the famous cheesecake from his avant-garde tapas bar Tickets, with notes of hazelnut as well as a non-traditional rind of white chocolate.

Also available will be ‘Classics’ such as egg flan with dark caramel and homemade donuts, decadent fruit cakes including pineapple with palm honey and strawberries with fresh orange jus, and a selection of specials such as ‘air waffles’ with caramelised banana and chocolate ‘ninyoyaki’ cake balls.

A wide selection of champagnes and sparkling wines will also be available for the ultimate ‘Cakes & Bubbles’ experience.
