Book a spa break an hour away from London

Are you in need of a spa getaway? In the Surrey hills, just an hour outside of London, lies Beaverbrook. It was former MP and publishing magnate Lord Beaverbrook’s home, now a luxury hotel complete with a dreamy thermal suite. Charlotte reports on her stay…

The spa

I like a spa day, I like the countryside – but I do not like to schlep. If you feel the same way, Beaverbrook is for you: just a short drive from London but a whole world away.

The hotel itself is gorgeous, full of fabulous art by Brian Clarke, modern juxtaposed with the traditional and wonderful scenic views. The spa, called The Coach House, is in its own building, home to an indoor pool, outdoor pool, gym and charming shop. While the space is soothing, the spa does have an amazing brightly coloured entrance of stained glass and vibrant tiles. It is like nothing I have seen before.

The treatments

Beaverbrook has its own sustainable bee hives on site, and the Signature Therapi facial makes much use of honey. Products contain propolis, which is what bees use to protect their hives from the environment. it’s anti inflammatory, too.

The treatment starts with a foot bath before a double cleanse, first using an oil cleanser and the second is a gel with orange blossom extract – good for normal-to-combination skin. It’s followed by an exfoliation which contains beeswax, continuing the honey theme, and then a mask. As it takes, I’m treated to a hot stone massage on my face and feet. It is a relaxing, therapeutic, facial, full of active botanicals, that leaves me blissed out and super relaxed.

The food

We have lunch in the Deli, the spa’s on-site all day eatery. It has an excellent choice of pastries and teas and heartier fare at mealtimes. Pick from fresh salads like charred broccoli, quinoa and artichoke and beetroot and goats cheese, alongside salmon, chicken, and delicious flatbreads with a range of toppings. These are made before you, in an open wood-fired pizza oven.

There’s a huge array of magazines and newspapers and could happily spend all day in the spa. But we wander round the hotel after lunch, and I vow to return – this time, for an overnight stay.

Charlotte is a London girl through and through. She sweats through spin and puffs through Pilates to justify trying the latest restaurants and devouring copious amounts of sweet potato fries, burrata and bread – preferably on holiday. Her favourite destinations include Italy, the Maldives and anywhere where the sun’s shining and there’s a strong breakfast buffet. She’s obsessed with walking, visiting farmers’ markets and reading. She’s also learning to cook. Wish her (and her husband) luck.
