We’ve all been on a night out with that friend who’s had “one too many tequilas”, or maybe that friend was you. Rather than mindlessly necking back shots, take a second to appreciate this divine elixir.
Aside from making marvellous Margaritas, tequila has a range of health benefits, from helping you to lose weight to aiding digestion, so long as (now here’s the catch…) you only drink small amounts. Welcome to the world of moderation…
It can help you lose weight
If you can manage to drink a controlled amount of tequila you can benefit from the weight-loss properties of agavins, which are a particular kind of sugar in tequila. Not be confused with agave nectar, agavins have a less refined molecular structure which doesn’t raise the blood sugar levels. As a result, many of the calories pass through the system unused as opposed to other alcohol sugars, which are not so glycemic index friendly. It also stimulates the metabolism and helps to dissolve fats.
It can help digestion
Taking a shot of tequila after a meal has been linked to aiding digestion as well. Some suggest a shot before a meal to rev up your metabolism and appetite, and then a shot after to soothe and assist digestion.
Helps to avoid diabetes
Researchers at the American Chemical Society found that tequila can help to lower sugar levels in the blood. They discovered that Agavina, which is a sugar that comes from the agave plant used to produce tequila, triggers insulin production which then lowers blood sugar.
It’s a prebiotic
Setting the stage for the good bacteria, prebiotics help tend the ground, so to speak. They create a living space for them. According to this study, the prebiotic attributes of tequila help make the intestines a more friendly environment for healthy bacteria to thrive.
It doesn’t give you a hangover
This is the age old myth of tequila that 100% agave tequila will not give you a hangover. We’re not so sure about this one but a hangover from 100% agave tequila is much less harsh then any other. Drinking 100% agave tequila will definitely give you far less of a hangover to drinking bottom shelf, shot with salt and lemon tequila. This is mainly down to 100% agave tequila begin made up of natural agave sugars, rather than artificial sugar.
