If you’re looking for an easy and luxurious summer break, Shara has found it.

Hotel Don Pepe Gran Melia hotel in Marbella is where to check in if you want some serious spoiling. It starts from the second we check in, with staff greeting us at the door to collect our bags and offering us a glass of champagne. Service remains excellent throughout our stay, with small touches like replenished complimentary water and chocolates in our room – so often forgotten after the first round has been demolished – going a long way.

Special touches

The hotel is large and what’s called Red Level Lounge access is worth opting for here. There’s an excellent spread of snacks and it’s nice to have somewhere to chill away from the sunshine. It also comes with a private check in area and board games to use whenever you fancy. Plus, staff can help you with excursions and more.

Decor

There’s lots of indoor greenery throughout the hotel. That, along with the ginseng scent in Reception, make you feel more as though you’re somewhere in Asia than Marbella. There are tropical gardens all around the hotel, making it feel incredibly secluded and peaceful. Make no mistake though, it’s very close to the centre of Marbella. Rooms are elegant and decorated in muted tones, with gorgeous views over the Mediterranean.

Food

Breakfast is notably excellent, with pancakes and eggs made to order. Everything else you could possibly want is on offer and a word of warning: all portion sizes are enormous (in the best possible way). Our dinner at one of the hotel restaurants, Erre, was wonderful. The newest restaurant at the hotel, from acclaimed chef Iñigo Urrechu, the word ‘Erre’ means ‘burning’. It’s so called to pay homage to traditional Basque barbecue. Staff were attentive, with excellent knowledge of the menu.

Time to chill

If you make time for a spa treatment (please note: you should) and opt for a facial, it’s worth starting with a skin diagnosis. This comes as part of the Advanced Experience and helps to determine the right treatment. Mine was wonderful – ask for Lorena.

If you prefer to relax al fresco, the pool is a fabulous size with plenty of space for sun loungers. In fact there’s so much space you can choose whether to sit poolside, on grass or on paving stone. This gives each day a nice bit of variety. There’s also a kids club, meaning little ones can be entertained while you make the most of the glorious set up. What’s not to like?

Charlotte is a London girl through and through. She sweats through spin and puffs through Pilates to justify trying the latest restaurants and devouring copious amounts of sweet potato fries, burrata and bread – preferably on holiday. Her favourite destinations include Italy, the Maldives and anywhere where the sun’s shining and there’s a strong breakfast buffet. She’s obsessed with walking, visiting farmers’ markets and reading. She’s also learning to cook. Wish her (and her husband) luck.
