Personal Trainer Ben Camara is the founder of No1 Fitness with two studios in London. He was also voted Men’s Health Trainer of the Year and has worked with some of the most famous faces in the world – Madonna and Kate Moss to name a few. Ben has recently launched Remote Coach – a service for personal trainers that allows them to train clients anywhere in the world.

In this podcast, we chat about his journey to becoming one of London’s most successful PT’s via a stint as a pro footballer, from humble beginnings in Tavistock Devon, his experience of anxiety and burnout, his thoughts on intermittent fasting and hanging out in Ibiza with the Queen of Pop herself.

He’s also a Personal Trainer who’s partial to the odd Sticky Toffee Pudding and Shepherds Pie… our kind of guy.

On sleep and mindful breathing

He speaks openly about how the last 7 months have affected his sleep, causing him to overthink. “I’m usually pretty good at sleeping”, he says, “but over the past 7 months, sleep has been tough. I find myself staying awake and overthinking”.

Ben says he copes with this with mindful nasal breathing to help him to focus and relax. He also finds that journaling his thoughts at night helps. “If I am overthinking”, he says, “I have a pen and paper next to the bed. If I write my thoughts onto paper, generally I start to get to sleep. I am usually overthinking about ways to help my clients, I might have had an idea and it stays in my head so I’d rather journal it.”

On where he gets his inspiration, he says “I do most of my problem solving when I’m outside, when I switch off my phone and go for a walk. I try and do this twice a day. It really helps to clear my head”.

On anxiety and burnout

He speaks plainly about struggling with anxiety over the years, prompted by the pressure of building a business. “With No1 fitness we had 28 trainers working for the brand… we grew it and felt the pressure… suddenly you are dealing with cashflow forecasts and landlords… it was burnout when I look back, why every three months I am conscious to take a long weekend or 4 days to sleep in if I need to and get some fresh air”.
