Podcast on Sensehacking with Professor Charles Spence

Sensehacking Charles Spence

Our next guest on the DOSE podcast is Professor Charles Spence, the world expert in multi sensory perception and experience design. His new book Sensehacking explores how to use the power of your senses for happier, healthy living.

“How can the furniture in your home affect your well-being? What colour clothing will help you play sport better? And what simple trick will calm you after a tense day at work? In his revelatory book, pioneering and entertaining Oxford professor Charles Spence shows how our senses change how we think and feel, and how by ‘hacking’ them we can reduce stress, become more productive and be happier.

We like to think of ourselves as rational beings, and yet it’s the scent of expensive face cream that removes wrinkles (temporarily) and the noise of the crowd really does affect the referee’s decision. Sensehacking explores how the senses are stimulated in nature, at home, in the workplace and at play. Using cutting-edge science, Spence shows how the senses interact and affect our minds and bodies”.

In this podcast, we discuss how increasing the temperature in the workplace can elevate female performance. Why smiling while exercising and sniffing peppermint can make us run faster, as well as how watching a thriller can increase our chances of a date ending well.

We talk about sensory overload and sensory deprivation, touching on the silicone valley trend of dopamine fasting. How, through social distancing restrictions enforced on us by Covid-19, we are living in an age of touch hunger – and the detriments of this to society. How we can boost productivity at work by smelling scent to reset and relieve stress, to playing background music.

“The more we train, educate our senses – the more we stand to gain from life”, says Spence.
