Self-care – a trendy, Instagrammable solution that has spawned a marketplace of items capitalising on our distress; from makeup to manicures, facemasks to massages and pink yoga? But let’s be honest, it beats a booze-fuelled singles night out and working ourselves into a Tinder frenzy.
According to clinical psychologist Dr Agnes Wainman, self-care is “something that refuels us, rather than takes from us.” So instead of draining your energy this Valentine’s Day, practice self-care with a class that will bathe you in a colour associated with love, affection and nurturing, essential oils and sound frequencies, guiding you to a serene and relaxed state of mind…
“With the use of props and the prolonged holding of a few simple poses, Pink classes helps to achieve a deep level of relaxation, triggering the parasympathetic nervous system”, explains ChromaYoga founder Nina Ryner. “It also helps lose subcutaneous fat and reduces cortisol levels, especially in the abdomen. This activation helps to mitigate the effects of the usual fight-or-flight stress response that can be damaging to your physiology and well-being. Slower movements cultivate space for a deeper experience of the poses and the breath.”
Whether you want to release physical tension, reach a calm state of mind, or both, Pink classes are all about letting go…
PINK: RELEASE
This class is all about letting go of any physical tension held by the body. Combined with deep stretching poses held for 4-5 minutes, you’ll be working with props to apply gentle sustained pressure into the Myofascial connective tissue to eliminate pain and restore motion. So if you’re a keen runner, sit at a desk all day or hold emotional tension in your body – a Pink:RELEASE class is for you.
PINK: RESTORE
The main focus of this class is to release any stressful or emotional energy using breathing techniques, visualisation and a selection of blocks, bolsters, blankets and straps. You will be guided into no more than 6 very gentle stretching and opening poses to allow the mind and body to achieve a blissfully calm meditative state.
SUPER PINK
Each month, a multi-skilled Pink teacher (Roberto and Rishin) will join forces with resident acupuncturist, Naoko Taoka, to host a deeply relaxing 2.5 hour Super Pink class. Focusing on the regulation of energy according to Chinese medicine, you will be moved into gentle restorative poses whilst receiving acupuncture as well as reiki and/or myofascial release techniques. Finish the class with a self-led Ganzsound meditation experience.
PINK: JIRIKI
Jiriki is a movement therapy, which is a form of Japanese self-healing bodywork – a restorative, relaxing and healing practice, which helps to realign your body. This method combines various elements of shiatsu massage, chiropractic treatment, yoga and meditation. Jiriki is a self-administered massage that uses energetic meridians and acupressure points, which are pathways of Qi (energy) and the life force. It’s aim is to cure and prevent most chronic disorders and pain by the practitioners’ own efforts and is a unique approach to release muscle tension and correct misalignment.
