Rooftop yoga, check. Swimming pool, check. Smoothies, fresh-fruit platters and a shop bursting with luxe costumes and high-waisted leggings, check. Could this be London’s most desirable summer wellness destination. DOSE contributor Jess finds out…
During an oppressive heatwave in London, the city streets are the last place you want to be. Instead, escape to a secret garden oasis, for a rooftop wellness experience, that’s as stylish as it is serene.
The Berkely Hotel in Mayfair has launched a summer yoga programme in partnership with luxe activewear company Silou London. Intimate classes of 8 are led by yoga teacher and Silou CEO Phoebe Greenacre and her colleague Kim Hartwell, who both practice what they preach.
I was taught by Greenacre, a former dancer and native Sydney-sider who is a 400 hour advanced yoga teacher. Her hour-long class gently blended vinyasa flow, power yoga, Hatha yoga and finished with a restorative wind down that left me feeling incredibly chilled. She’s good humoured, too – part of the Aussie charm – and while she loves yoga, admits in class to some of her own yogic failings, which, for a not-great-yogi such as myself, was instantly reassuring. But she pushed us hard, before a few minutes of restorative stretches on the mat.
The collaboration with her brand Silou London and the hotel doesn’t end with the classes; the luxe kit, from unitards (“the best thing to do yoga in” Greenacre insists) to stretchy vest tops and high waisted leggings are available to buy in the spa’s boutique. There are a new line of swimsuits too, with high necks and surprisingly flattering silhouettes, which is where the name of the company comes from.
You might need a swimsuit to take advantage of the pool after class; either lie around in a robe, or dive into the hotel’s Temple-inspired pool. Either way, you’ll leave feeling like a goddess.
