Staycay and The City – The Standard, London

 Why Trust Us

Disclosure

Living up to its name, The Standard, London sets a new benchmark for hip city hotels brimming with character. Favoured by cool creatives and celebrities alike, it has become the hedonistic hotspot of Kings Cross. From mouth-watering Michelin menus to buzzing DJ booths and rooftop bars with 360-degree panoramic views, it would be naïve to stay here and expect an early night. Read on for a deeper dive into this pleasure seekers paradise…

Location

Formerly Camden Town Hall, the Brutalist building has undergone a meticulous makeover, setting the stage for The Standard’s first hotel outside of America. London’s thriving King’s Cross neighbourhood provides a bustling backdrop that’s easily accessible for midweek stays and stopovers.

Ambience

A hip hideout for hedonists, the sultry 1970’s stylistic décor makes it a den for debauchery that’s unapologetically opulent. The energetic colour palette courtesy of interior designer Shawn Hausman juxtaposes the “greyness of London”. In uniform with The Standard’s signature branding with tendency to “be a bit naughty”, the emerald leather suites, shag pile carpets and racing red wardrobes project an atmosphere that’s far from dull or dreary; it’s impossible not to succumb to the infectiously mischievous spirit. Housing 266 rooms in total, ranging from Cosy Core to terraced suites equipped with alfresco bathtubs overlooking St Pancras Station, there’s something to match everyman’s price point.

Drinking and Dining

Prepare to be spoilt for choice. The repertoire of restaurants is infinite. Let us begin at ground level. Here you’ll find Double Standard – a street-facing bar and restaurant home to the legendary blue cheese and bacon burger, dangerously moreish cocktails and bottomless brunches, hosted every Sunday from 12-5pm. When the British weather is on its best behaviour, take your meal outside onto the terrace and soak up the sunshine.

Next up, Isla, featuring a seasonal menu that serves up sustainably sourced seafood and small plates accompanied by natural wines. The beauty is in the simplicity: The Tagliolini pasta allows the delicate Devonshire crab to carry the dish, complimented yet not overpowered by its chilli and parsley counterparts. The selection of puddings have advocated alcoholic accompaniments – pair the sea salt Chocolate Mousse with Sandeman 20-Year-Old Tawny Port for the ultimate indulgent night cap.

Nestled away amongst the Brutalist walls for when you need a pause from the party lies the Library lounge – a sanctuary for snacking and getting stuck into books, with categories including order and chaos, science and religion or, even more complex, adult relationships.
While visiting, don’t forget to sneak a peek into the Sound Studio, where you may see a podcast being recorded or a DJ hitting the decks.

On ascension to the 10th-floor, via the iconic red pill lift, you’ll find Decimo. Sexy and glamorous as hell, this is where Chef Peter Sanchez-Iglesias works his Michelin star magic, showcasing live-fire culinary theatrics surrounded by a 360-degree view of London. Feast on a fiesta of flavours – gambas rojas, Iberico pork and artichokes, all washed down with never too many Mezcalitas.

Finally, The Rooftop. Open 7 days a week for spontaneous walk-ins and reservations, it’s the perfect place to soak up a slice of The Standard buzz accompanied by blasting beats, bites to eat and a background of panoramic city sights.

Get to know

In honour of London’s Cocktail Week running between 13th-22nd October, Bompas & Parr will be creating the world’s first premium poppers to pair with a curated cocktail at Sweeties – The Standard’s bar-meets-late night party pad. With pleasure at the forefront of the ‘Excalibur XO’ activation, these artisanal poppers are launching with an unbridled celebration of queer innovation, public joyfulness, sex positivity and exceptional design, with strict regulatory policies in place to ensure the safety of all participants.

Bottom Line…

If you’re looking for the combination of cool interiors, dreamy cuisine and an always-on-the-verge-of-a-party vibe where drinks flow freely until the early hours of the morning, then book a stay at The Standard, London. I promise you the hangover will be worth the fun (and Isla is open-all-day serving up hair of the dog Bloody Marys if you’re in desperate need of a cure).
