The vibe

The Pig’s have built up quite a reputation in the last few years, so you may already be familiar with their cosy interiors, rustic decor and friendly staff. But one of the best thing is that each Pig has its own distinct, local vibe – and we found The Pig at Bridge Place was a winner.

The hotel is in a 400-year-old building, and it’s warrenous, with plenty of little snugs for a cosy drink, and wonderful kitchen gardens. It’s very near Canterbury, should you wish to visit, but we were happy in front of the fireplace. The whole place is super informal and relaxed.

The main event (the food)

Come hungry and thirsty: it is all about the food and drink here, with items changing seasonally and much produced hyper-locally. Indeed, there’s a 25-mile menu working with 36 local suppliers – think Kentish Pip apples from three miles away and cheese from the Cheese Makers of Canterbury 11 miles away. Chickens and pigs are home-reared. Produce comes thanks to in-house gardeners and foragers.

Our sommelier recommended pinot noir from the Simpsons Estate (five miles) which was excellent. Food was terrific, with highlights of honey mustard chipolatas, smoked trout, cod and all the sides. The pickle jars are a real ‘thing’, and there’s also an outdoor kitchen with a wood fired oven.

The rest

Rooms are rustic, with wooden details and soft velvet furnishings. They have comfy beds, excellent mini bars and ours had a walk-in monsoon shower and freestanding bath, with a great view overlooking the water and meadow.

If you want a treatment, head to the Potting Shed for a massage, scrub or facial  in the most serene of settings. You’ll leave restored and happy – much as you will after your whole stay here.

Charlotte is a London girl through and through. She sweats through spin and puffs through Pilates to justify trying the latest restaurants and devouring copious amounts of sweet potato fries, burrata and bread – preferably on holiday. Her favourite destinations include Italy, the Maldives and anywhere where the sun’s shining and there’s a strong breakfast buffet. She’s obsessed with walking, visiting farmers’ markets and reading. She’s also learning to cook. Wish her (and her husband) luck.
