How to become a… Yoga instructor

Name: Rosie Sargeant – Management consultant and part-time yoga instructor

Why did you choose this career? I worked at an investment bank and yoga was a hobby to mitigate the stress of the job. I began to realise my real passion was in yoga, not finance, and plucked up the courage to quit my job and pursue a career in fitness and yoga instead. You can read my story here.

Good for… Someone who wants a more flexible (pardon the pun!) lifestyle than an office 9 – 5.

How to qualify: I cannot stress enough that you need to find a training programme that suits you. There isn’t a course that suits all and there are lots to choose from but I would recommend this one by triyoga.

Tip: If you practise regularly at a particular studio, consider asking a teacher there whom you trust whether they can recommend a programme for you. Many studios now host their own training programmes too.

Cost: Budget at least £2k for a good course. See this as an investment in your future – don’t skimp on it.

How to become a… Spin instructor

Name: Shara Tochia – Spinning instructor and co-founder of DOSE

Why did you choose this career? I went to dance school for 10 years after school and on the weekends. As a result I am naturally very active and clearly have a craving to perform. I really didn’t enjoy my degree or what I was groomed to do so I studied to teach classes part time when I graduated. I guess I wanted to have a side hustle. I love spin as I love any classes that are choreographed to the beat of the music (like back in dance school).

Teaching spinning is good for… People that have a lot of energy. People pleasers with performance cravings.

How to qualify? Level 2 exercise to music will give you the best grounding you could need to teach spinning then you can bolt on a spinning course. There are even courses you can do in 2 – 3 days via Schwinn. You can also train directly to qualify with a studio like BOOM Cycle now.

Tip: Find a class you love and would like your classes to be taught like and get some advice from the teacher on their journey and recommendations. It’s still a new job/career in a growing and very competitive industry so be prepared to network, hustle and practise. Do not start teaching at a boutique unless you train up with one. Start at the gyms.

Cost: Anything from £300 up.

How to become an… Energy healer

Name: Josie – Reiki Master Teacher/Intuitive Energy Healing, Eleven Healing.

Why did you choose this career? Sometimes your calling finds you. It wasn’t something I woke up and decided to do, I had an intense awakening to my healing abilities in 2011. It changed my entire life as I began a quest of healing myself and others. By Summer 2014 I left my job in the city as a PA to launch my healing practice and it has been a magical journey ever since. Not a moment passes by when I do not feel deep gratitude to be able to work with other people in this way and witness the shifts that energy healing can bring to someones health, wellbeing and life. It is my mission to continue spreading awareness of energy healing. I truly believe it is just as integral to our health as a good diet and exercise.

Good for… Someone who genuinely cares for the wellbeing of others and who would like to create the change they wish to see. Someone who is already working within the holistic/wellbeing/health field who may wish to deepen and expand their practice. Someone who has compassion and empathy for others and would like to channel it into something. Although it is the most beautiful thing to be able to do this sacred work with others, it does take a great deal of dedication, discipline and strength to be in healing service. It is a way of life, rather than just a job which you turn up to do sometimes.

How to qualify… If you feel called to deepen your spirituality or connect to energy healing to share with others or yourself then Reiki is the most wonderful way to begin your journey! It can feel overwhelming trying to find the right Reiki Master to learn with as there are so many out there so it is important to find one which resonates for you. My advice would be to experience a one to one Reiki session with the Reiki Master first before you commit to the course or ask to meet for a chat so you can ask any questions and feel the vibe. Trust your intuition. Reiki Level 1: 1-2 Days. Reiki Level 2: 1-2 Days/ Reiki Master: 2-7 Days

Tip… In order to get insurance to have a professional Reiki practice you are required to have Reiki Level 2 qualification. Some Reiki Masters offer fast track Reiki courses where you can qualify Level 1 and Level 2 in the same weekend for example. My advice would be to wait at least 3 months between the levels because it is beneficial to leave enough time to fully integrate and process the teachings and attainments into your life.

Cost: Reiki training costs vary slightly depending on the duration of the course and whether teaching is shared on a one to one or group basis. Reiki Master courses are sometimes held in a retreat environment over a 1 week period: Reiki 1 £150-£300, Reiki 2 £200-£400, Reiki Master £300-£1,500.
