You spent the weekend out drinking with your friends because you felt you couldn’t really say no and feared you’d miss out on a great night. But secretly, you wish you’d sat on your sofa in your pyjamas watching Gossip Girl. Here’s why you need to embrace the joy of missing out…
It feels good to say ‘no’
The joy of missing out (JOMO) is the act of getting pleasure from missing out on plans with others – and that means learning to say ‘no’. Instagram has us believe everyone is living their best lives but your friends probably aren’t having as much fun as it looks anyway. Plus, staying in is officially the new going out.
More time for self-care
Burnout is more common than ever as we work demanding hours and feel the pressure to be constantly switched on and available. But taking a break and slowing down is vital for your mental and physical wellbeing – and you certainly aren’t going to do that when your week is packed full of social engagements. Whatever self-care looks like to you – a candlelit bath, a yoga class, long walk, or simply an early night – JOMO will help you make time for yourself.
Guiltless TV binge-watching
There’s absolutely nothing wrong with sitting on your sofa with a cup of tea (or wine!) watching Netflix. Shake off that feeling that you should be doing something else with your time and just sit back, relax and enjoy.
Saving money is one of the biggest benefits of JOMO. Think about all the cash you could save if you weren’t splurging on expensive cocktails, fancy dinners and Uber rides. Put the money you do save towards a holiday or set up a savings fund.
Allows you to re-focus
JOMO is all about doing exactly what you want to do – and more importantly, finding the headspace to work out what this is and what makes you happy. It gives you the time to make plans, chase your goals and dreams and pursue other interests and hobbies. Top tip: put your phone on aeroplane mode, which will allow you to resist the urge to check social media.
You don’t have to be a hermit and sit around to embrace JOMO. Imagine what could happen if you free up you calendar of all those unwanted commitments and just go with the flow.
