What it’s like to date a fitness addict

 Why Trust Us

Disclosure

We ask two gym-obsessed duos to dish the dirt on their relationships in a bid to find out if it’s true as the saying goes, ‘couples who sweat together, stay together’…

Mike and Amy

Amy Costello, 30, and Mike Chapman, 29, own F45 Tottenham Court Road and Salt Escapes, a luxury fitness retreat company. They have been together for around four years and met while working at a restaurant in Sydney. They both train F45 five days a week.

What she said:

What are the pros of dating a fitness junkie?
It’s handy that we both enjoy training in our spare time. With a gym and a travel company to run, we spend A LOT of time together but it’s all work. It’s great to be with someone who priorities training like I do, so it’s always a given that it’s something we do together in our free time. He also definitely holds me accountable to my training. We’re both pretty competitive with each other so this keeps me on top of my game!

What are the cons?
The washing… it’s never-ending!

Favourite exercise to do together?
Aside from F45, we love doing a You Go, I Go-style workout. This is where your partner completes an exercise/number of reps whilst you rest or complete a different exercise, then you switch. It’s great fun and it always challenges us both, as the amount you work or rest is always dependent on the other person.

Do couples who sweat together stay together?
Our shared love of training has certainly changed our lives. It allowed us to build a business and work together, which we love. Training has endless benefits for your physical and mental health. We strongly believe that it keeps us happy, and helps to reduce our stress levels with our crazy work-load, so who knows perhaps it’s saved us from a lot of arguments.

What he said:

What are the pros of dating a fitness junkie?
Food. Pretty much whenever I’m hungry, she is too!

What are the cons?
I’m going to have to agree with Amy. The clothes washing is endless!

Favourite exercise to do together?
F45. Always varied styles so it’s guaranteed to keep you on your toes, plus training with friends is great because it keeps you accountable, and if you’re not ‘feeling it’ your partner can push you so you don’t waste your time (which we’re all guilty of occasionally).

Do couples who sweat together stay together?
Speaking for our relationship, and from observing hundreds of couples who’ve come to train with us on our trips, or at our gym – 100%. No question. It’s definitely a unique bond. We all know that exercise releases endorphins, so it’s pretty logical that if you’re both training together, you’re both happier, more reasonable and caring people – and sharing that post-workout ‘high’ with someone definitely bonds you in a unique way. It gives you a sense of accomplishing something together.

Tom and Courtney

Tom Bliss, 26, and Courtney Pruce, 25, are both personal trainers. They have been together for 18 months and met at the gym. They are both highly passionate about CrossFit and train 4-6 times a week. They also compete in fitness competitions both individually and together.

What she said:

What are the pros of dating a fitness junkie?
He’s strong enough to lift me up without making grunting noises haha. And the body isn’t bad either…

What are the cons?
Most of our arguments are gym-related. We often bicker over exercise selection, planning workouts and filming each other for social media. We are both very passionate and strong-minded individuals, which can cause a few gym riffs at times.

Favourite exercise to do together?
Big sweaty Partner WODs! We love synchro burpees and toes to bar.

Do couples who sweat together stay together?
Yes definitely. A shared passion is an amazing gluing agent, especially when it comes to sharing our very limited free time together as we both want to do the same things. I am a firm believer that being like-minded and equally driven about something is the key to a successful relationship.

What he said:

What are the pros of dating a fitness junkie?
I wouldn’t describe her as a junkie but she’s pretty bad-ass in the gym. She pushes me hard and even beats me at handstand push ups/burpee workouts!

What are the cons?
What she said – we can NEVER decide on what exercises/workouts to do. She’s a fiery and passionate individual (which I love) but in the heat of battle on the gym floor we can sometimes get at each other.

Favourite exercise to do together?
Handstand holds.

Do couples who sweat together stay together?
Absolutely. Whether it be the gym or another shared passion and hobby, doing something together is going to cement your relationship and make it even stronger.
