Part meditation, part recalibrating the brain, part the power of positive thought, theta healing is very difficult to explain unless you experience it for yourself. You’ve probably not even heard of it (we hadn’t!) but apparently the technique has amazing benefits – from treating emotional issues to illnesses and injuries. We sent DOSE writer Charlotte to try it out…
I must admit after reading up on theta healing I was somewhat cynical. But the right practitioner can do wonders, and Dylan Ayaloo, a theta healer and meditation expert, is excellent. He begins my first session by asking me to think of something I want to work on. It can be anything from acknowledging you deserve to be treated well, become a person able to give and accept love, or in my case, overcoming my most judgemental thoughts.
With that in mind, Dylan had me stand up and close my eyes, feet grounded. He asked me a series of questions, seeing if I rock intuitively forwards as I answer, which indicates yes, or backwards, which indicates no. It’s not logical, he tells me, but intuitive – the whole session is about how the heart would answer questions, rather than that brain.
Seated on a chair, he asks me questions that seem off topic to being judgemental, but have me talking about childhood experiences, situations I haven’t thought about for years, and posing some seriously uncomfortable questions to myself. There’s no rush, and there’s no right or wrong answers. Questions are open ended, like “and why do you think that is?” or “and what would happen if you allowed yourself to do that?”. I was totally awake and certainly aware, but the point is to enter a mediative state where you are answering not with rationale but with feeling.
What’s the theory?
The theory behind theta healing, as I can understand it, is two fold: our thoughts are shaped by our deep-rooted, beliefs, and we are all made up of energy. We consists of atoms and we vibrate at different frequencies. Changing our beliefs can change these energy patterns, affecting real change. It’s an alternative therapy, that wouldn’t be advisable if someone was really struggling and needed medication, but could be used as a daily coping mechanism holistically.
With the questions done, Dylan performs his role, which is helping to clear energy. Believe in it if you will, but he asks me questions like “do you give me permission to send understanding and the highest form of unconditional love to you in this life and in all lives,” to which I reply yes. He goes quiet, and I assume something is done. While I can’t pretend I felt drastically different afterwards, I certainly felt more peaceful than when the session started, which simply have been the cathartic power of talking – or not. He is tapped in to other people’s energy, which has come from a lot of practice.
His message is a positive one: you can live the life you want and deserve, if you work on yourself and allow others to help you change beliefs, mindset and energy.
Theta healing really is something you must experience for yourself. My session felt like it encompassed therapy, part mediation, part spiritual guru – Dylan’s very first words to me are “this defies logic,” and he’s right.
